It's easy to have a great holiday in Greece.
It doesn't take a lot of planning, packing is really easy, the beaches are the best in the world, and the only risk factor is that you bring the wrong beach books with you. Of course, if you're blessed with the means to stay in a wonderful place, it's quite perfect!
I not only feel a deep connection to the homeland of my grandparents, this trip has me feeling somewhat invested. Somewhat... because the practical Kalliope realizes the complexity of the situation. The romantic in me thinks that there is a deeper connection, an investment for me to make in this place.
So while I contemplate what this could be, I'm going to do it spending hours swimming, floating, thinking in the waters of the Aegean. Channeling the strength of all that came before me, respecting the place where four of the most important people on earth were born, and asking them what do I do now?
As a friend put it at dinner the other night, overlooking the beautiful water at Schinias, it's about the future. The past is the past, it's time to figure out what Greece will be. This is difficult for a land, a culture with such a deep history. But it's time to take what is best from the past, and press the "forward" button, don't let your history define you. This is what my grandparents did more than eighty years ago. They had to leave to do it then... this time it will require staying, and for some of us coming back in someway shape or form.
